If you grew up in the late ’90s-early ’00s, ever shopped at Dick’s Sporting Goods or have a dad that loved mowing the lawn, chances are that you’re familiar with adidas‘ Superstar Millennium. An updated take on the classic Superstar that first released in 1998 and continued rolling out in various (slightly altered) forms over the next few years, the Millennium was designed for basketball — just like the silhouette inspired it — but became a sporting goods store icon, “famous” for its easygoing look, quality build and simple color schemes. Now, more than 25 years after it first hit shelves, the Superstar Millennium is back once again, hoping to ride a wave of Y2K nostalgia to lifestyle relevance.
The first two colorways of the Superstar Millenium to return are “Cloud White” and “Core Black,” the former of which surrounds its black stripes, tongue detailing and heel branding with a white leather base, the latter offering the inverse. Both also feature sleek shell-toe toeboxes that creep up to the bottom of the throat and a stylized embroidered line below the collar that snakes down onto the midsole, where it’s continued with cored-out detailing.
Will the Y2K “dad” classic find favor with a new audience (or win back the hearts of its old one)? We’ll find out when it releases via the adidas webstore and select retail partners on August 1, priced at $130 USD.
