adidas sent shockwaves through the world of running shoes — and, shortly thereafter, the world of casual shoes thanks to a bit of help from then-partner Ye — with the release of the UltraBOOST in 2015. Squishy, bouncy BOOST foam, debuted on the EnergyBOOST in 2013 but made famous by the UltraBOOST, is officially dubbed “expanded thermoplastic polyurethane,” or eTPU for short, and is created by expanding thermoplastic polyurethane particles around pockets of air, making for a long-lasting cushion that’s engineered to maximize a runner’s kinetic output by increasing the amount of energy that their shoes can absorb and return, a concept that adidas has explored at length since the technology was first introduced.

Since that first UltraBOOST release, the line has become one of adidas’ most recognizable franchises, and now it’s set to step into a new era with the launch of the UltraBOOST 5. The Three Stripes touts the new model as the UltraBOOST’s “biggest redesign” since its launch, with a totally reconstructed build that offers the highest energy return of any UltraBOOST model yet thanks to new geometries that offer more responsiveness in the heel and midfoot, 2% more forefoot energy return and 9mm more BOOST than previous models.

This new setup doesn’t come with increased weight either, as it uses adidas’ modern LIGHT BOOST technology, offering all the standard BOOST benefits while reducing weight. Other technological enhancements include a Primeknit upper that’s knit tighter in high-wear zones and looser in less-stressed zones to enhance breathability. There’s also a modern iteration of adidas’ classic Torsion midfoot support system and a high-grade Continental rubber outsole. Color-wise, the UltraBOOST 5 is launching with a colorway that combines a subtle white and “Glory Grey” upper with an energetic mix of “Spark Orange” and “Lucid Pink” on its midsole.

“The UltraBOOST is a true running icon, and this is our best [iteration of it] yet,” said Simon Lockett, adidas’ footwear product marketing category director. “82% of people that have tested it say they prefer its energy return to their own shoes, and 70% said they had more fun while running wearing it. That’s always been the superpower of UltraBOOST.”

adidas adiClub members can purchase the UltraBOOST 5 now, while its general release will occur on the adidas webstore and at select stockists July 18. Its MSRP is set at $180 USD.
