It would be hard to find a New Balance model that isn’t offered in gray. In fact, its affinity for gray dates back to the 1980s and has pretty much remained as its de-facto shade for all of its running shoes and more recently, its lifestyle sneakers as well.
In honor of the color, New Balance celebrates “Grey Days” each May, a month of paying homage to the heritage shade. It’s already launched its “Grey Shop,” offering gray editions of some of its most popular models, like the women’s 550 and the chunky unisex 9060, alongside gray apparel. And throughout May, the Boston-based brand will be dropping a series of gray sneakers.
The first models to receive the “Grey Day” treatment are the WRPD Runner, a dramatic sculpted sneaker, and the vintage-inspired 1906R, reminiscent of New Balances early aughts running shoes. Dropping May 17, sneakers will come with new materials and textures and a detailed distressed look.
Days later, on May 20, the Fresh Foam X 1080 “Grey” launches in a tonal shade. The men’s running shoe is also being updated with suede detailing for a more versatile but classic feel.
For its next release on May 23, New Balance will be joining forces with its frequent collaborator, the California-by-way-of-New York running brand District Vision. The two will be launching a gray version of their hit District Vision x New Balance SC Elite v4, an endurance-minded road runner, alongside an apparel collection.
The same day, New Balance is unveiling a new shoe for the first time: the KAWHI IV. The basketball shoe features a low-top silhouette and breathable mesh upper, built for performance and optimal support on the court.
For the final “Grey Days” release – that we know of – New Balance is rolling out a grey shade of Coco Gauff’s signature shoe, the Coco CG1, and the new Fresh Foam Audazo Numeric, building on the popular Audazo Pro and Command models.
Ahead of the sneaker drops, New Balance is also planning to premiere a short film, aptly titled “Grey Days,” exploring the color’s significance to the brand.
