Decades later, Hiroshi Fujiwara is as important to Nike as ever. The “Godfather of Streetwear” has once again shifted from hype amplifier to architect of innovation with the introduction of Fragment Concept Testing. Announced today by Fujiwara and Nike, the new collaborative project debuts with co-designed colorways of the Mind 001, Mind 002, and Air Liquid Max.

Before fragment design was founded in 2003, Fujiwara was one-third of Nike’s influential HTM trio. Composed of cultural leader Hiroshi Fujiwara, designer Tinker Hatfield, and former Nike CEO Mark Parker, HTM was a playground for innovation. The trio explored the boundaries of footwear, from transforming staples like the Air Force 1 into luxury propositions to experimenting with progressive silhouettes like the Sock Dart. After pioneering designs such as the Flyknit Racer and Flyknit Trainer, the group concluded its run with individually designed Air Max silhouettes, released on Air Max Day in 2016.

When a shoe was presented by HTM, sneakerheads knew it wasn’t just limited, but cutting-edge. At the same time, Fujiwara’s fragment design and its lightning bolt logo became a powerful hype engine for Nike. Standouts such as fragment design’s Dunk High “City Pack” in 2010 and its Air Jordan 1 collaboration in 2014 remain two of the most important sneaker launches of the 2010s. Rather than crafting radically new silhouettes, Fujiwara found success through a restrained “less is more” philosophy applied across a myriad of models.

Fujiwara has made it clear this year that Nike continues to lean on him as a strategic cultural force. He recently revisited the Air Jordan 1, teaming up with Union LA and Jordan Brand for three pairs that commanded the world’s attention. Meanwhile, Fujiwara also worked with Devin Booker on the rollout of the Nike Book 2, applying the fragment design treatment.

As if that wasn’t enough, Fujiwara teased collaborations with three of Nike’s new experimental silhouettes: the Mind 001, Mind 002, and Air Liquid Max. All three have just been officially revealed in the announcement of his new Fragment Concept Testing platform.

“I’ve always been interested in new technology and innovation, and when I had the opportunity to quietly preview several new Nike sneakers and hear about their concepts directly, Liquid Max and the Mind series immediately stood out,” shares Fujiwara. “When I first started working with Nike in the late ’90s, I learned how the brand was constantly creating new sneakers for athletes using the latest technology. Both the Liquid Max and Nike Mind feel very much like ‘true Nike’ products in that sense.”

Fujiwara’s excitement for these cutting-edge designs starts with the Mind 001, one of the breakout stories of the year. Introduced alongside the Mind 002 as Nike’s first neuroscience-informed footwear, the designs have sparked notable curiosity. For the slip-on silhouette, Fujiwara’s signature fusion of black and blue returns. The former covers the stealthy build, accented by the latter at the 22 independent foam nodes designed to “lock in mindset before and after competition.” Outside of the recognizable color scheme, his iconic lightning bolt logo at the toe and “Fragment Concept Testing” text at the lateral make Fujiwara’s presence clear.

As for the Mind 002, Fragment Concept Testing’s influence goes far beyond stamping it with a co-sign. Its simple mesh upper has been discarded in favor of a complex, deconstructed Flyknit build. This dramatic shift in design language elevates it from being merely the sneaker version of the Mind 001 to a fully considered silhouette.

“I approached the Nike Mind 002 from an experimental perspective — wondering what would happen if we combined it with completely different materials, swapping the existing upper to something else,” says Fujiwara. “The result is almost an entirely different product. It’s a sneaker I’d want to wear in the summer.”

Its usage of Flyknit, a revolutionary material Fujiwara helped debut through HTM in 2012, results in rich textures across the upper. In addition to a black-and-blue arrangement, there is a “Particle Grey” rendition that also embraces blue at the nodes. A lightning bolt-branded pull-tab system secures the shoe while extending its visual depth. As with the Mind 001, both colorways feature project text at the lateral midsole.

The Air Liquid Max, one of the most compelling Air Max Day propositions in years, is the final canvas for Fragment Concept Testing’s debut. Rather than supply it with color, Fujiwara has instead stripped the model to its forward-thinking DNA by covering it in black. Its contoured Air unit delivers a striking visual profile and a uniquely cushioned ride. As for the three-layer textured printing that enlivens the upper, it features a “Fragment Concept Testing” callout and the lightning bolt logo at the tongue.

10 years removed from HTM’s swan song, Fragment Concept Testing is restoring the feeling. While the initiative differs from its predecessor, it taps into the same exploration-driven mindset that led the Swoosh to where it is today — with Fujiwara once again helping define what comes next.

Fragment Concept Testing’s Mind 001 and Mind 002 are releasing via fragment on March 14, before a global drop on March 19. From there, the Air Liquid Max will be available from fragment on March 31, leading to a global retail release on April 3.
